Interactive LED Canvas

Date

December 2025

Project type

Physical Computing

Custom

Touchdesigner, Wiring, LED board, Matrix Portal M4 board

Overview
The Interactive LED Canvas is a physical computing installation that responds to real time user movement through camera based motion detection. The project explores how physical space, digital visuals, and human interaction can merge into an immersive, responsive experience.
The canvas functions as a living digital artwork shifting colors, patterns, and brightness in response to viewer presence, movement, and proximity.

Project Goals
The goal of this project was to design an interactive visual system that transforms user movement into dynamic digital art. The project focused on:
- Creating a responsive, camera driven interaction system
- Exploring movement as an input method
- Designing a physical installation with real-time feedback
- Combining hardware, software, and UX design principles

System Structure
The system uses a camera to detect motion and movement intensity, translating this data into real time color and pattern changes across a 64×64 RGB LED matrix panel. Movement closer to the canvas increases visual intensity, while slower or distant motion results in softer visual responses.
This creates a feedback loop where users learn how their body movement directly shapes the visual output.

Interface & Interaction Design
The visual system emphasizes fluid motion, color blending, and smooth transitions to avoid harsh or strobing effects. The interaction is intentionally intuitive no instructions are required. Users quickly understand that movement changes the display, encouraging playful exploration.
Visual behavior is designed to feel organic, reinforcing the idea that the canvas is a responsive, living surface rather than a static screen.

Learning Outcomes
Through this project, I developed strong skills in:
- Physical computing and sensor based interaction design
- Real time data mapping
- Hardware software integration
- Interactive installation design
- Rapid prototyping and debugging
This project demonstrates my ability to design immersive, responsive systems that bridge physical and digital interaction.
